Scope of Work:
PROPOSED IMPROVEMENTS (TUNNEL REHABILITATION)
- Rehabilitation of the Henry E. Kinney Tunnel for structural, mechanical, electrical, architectural, and life safety:
- Replace ventilation fans and improve flow
- New LED tunnel lighting
- Remove delaminated tiles
- Repair ventilation buildings
- Upgrade electrical equipment and generator
- Replace stormwater pumps
- Upgrade to bicycle friendly drainage grates
- Install sensors for vehicle exhaust gases
- Upgrade fire lines and equipment
- Upgrade emergency signing and lighting
- Pavement resurfacing
- Install Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) from I-595 to north of Broward Boulevard
- Dynamic Message Signs (DMS)
- CCTV Cameras, including in the tunnel
- Overheight vehicle sensors
- Warning gates and signals at tunnel entrance
- Upgrade signalized intersections with Adaptive Traffic Signal Control for enhanced mobility along the US-1 corridor
PROPOSED IMPROVEMENTS (CITY IMPROVEMENTS)
- 117-foot extension of the tunnel top on the north side of Las Olas Boulevard to provide additional area for a new pedestrian plaza
- Hardscape and landscape improvements in the new pedestrian plaza and in Laura Ward Riverwalk Plaza

- Ground plantings and green areas
- Planters
- Irrigation
- Decorative concrete sidewalks and walkways
- Seat walls
- Pedestrian and landscape lighting

Construction Impacts:
- Construction for the rehabilitation of the Henry E. Kinney Tunnel and for the extension of the tunnel to the north for the new pedestrian plaza will require phased temporary closure of northbound or southbound SR 5/US-1/Federal Highway to safely maintain traffic in the area.
- Periodic full closures of US-1 at the Henry E. Kinney Tunnel for the bridge work over US-1 for the pedestrian plaza. Vehicular and pedestrian traffic will be detoured.
- Detours routes with proper signing will be set up during any closure of US-1. Lane closures along Las Olas Boulevard are expected for the reconstruction of the intersection of SE 6th Avenue.
