Purpose of Project:To improve rail capacity for the South Florida Rail Corridor (SFRC) through the construction of an additional 1.25 miles of mainline track within the SFRC from just north of the Hialeah Market Tri-Rail Station to the Tri-Rail Airport Station at the Miami Intermodal Center (MIC). The project also improves freight services, commuter mobility, Tri-Rail travel time and schedule adherence, and improves intermodal connectivity.

PROPOSED IMPROVEMENTS

  • A second mainline track will be added (double tracking) to the southern 1.25 miles of the SFRC strengthening South Florida’s supply chain.
  • The single-track railroad bascule (movable) bridge over the Miami River will be replaced with two fixed single-track bridges, improving the resiliency of this crossing.
  • The Hialeah Market Tri-Rail Station platform will be upgraded to include a 400-foot center platform for the double track to accommodate riders.
  • The six railroad crossings and the roadways will be upgraded for the new double track, including new signals and gates.
  • Railroad signals will be upgraded/replaced to the latest industry technology.

 CONSTRUCTION IMPACTS AND SEQUENCING

  • Work will be done in phases to minimize interruptions to train operations and the public during construction.
  • Access to properties will be maintained during construction.
  • Railroad crossings and the roadways approaching them will be reconstructed requiring limited roadway closures and detours at six locations (please see detour information in the pictures below).
  • Temporary bus shuttles will be provided for Tri-Rail service interrupted by the 30-day closure of the Hialeah-Market Station during its reconstruction.
  • Intermittent interruption of rail services during weekends or off-peak hours are planned for railroad signals and track tie-in work.
  • Another public meeting (Construction Open House) will be held prior to construction. Detailed information on how to stay informed of potential construction impacts will be provided at this meeting.
