8. Henry E. Kinney Tunnel Improvements and Pedestrian Plaza Project in Fort Lauderdale
Description: Project improvements include rehabilitating the structural, mechanical, electrical, architectural, and life safety components of the Henry E. Kinney Tunnel; milling and resurfacing SR-5/ US-1 from Rio Vista Boulevard to south of the Tunnel; installing Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) along SR-5/ US-1; extending the tunnel top to accommodate a pedestrian plaza which will include new fountains, seating facilities, re-designed brick pavers, artificial turf and landscape installation, and reconstructing the intersection of Las Olas Boulevard at SE 6th Avenue. US-1 in each direction from I-595 to Broward Boulevard may have up to two lanes closed, daily as needed Monday through Friday.
The pedestrian sidewalk on US-1 will also be closed in association with the operation and pedestrians will be detoured as necessary with signage in place to assist.
US-1 Traffic Configuration:
US-1 will continue to be reduced to one lane in each direction through May 2024.
The northbound tunnel chamber is currently closed, and traffic is shifted to the southbound tunnel chamber, where one lane in each direction will be maintained at all times. This traffic shift is anticipated through Monday morning, April 1 for tunnel rehabilitation operations within the northbound chamber. Signage will be in place to assist motorists.
The pedestrian sidewalk along US-1 through the tunnel, from SE 6th Street to SE 2nd Street, is closed through Monday morning, March 18 for tunnel rehabilitation operations. Pedestrians are being detoured via SE 3rd Avenue.
Traffic Shift Advanced Notice: Traffic will be shifted to the outside lanes of each tunnel chamber on Monday morning, April 1. The inside lane of US 1, within the tunnel, will be closed. This traffic shift is necessary to safely place rainscreens along the tunnel walls. Signage will be in place to assist motorists.
9. SR A1A/SE 17th Street Causeway Bridge Painting Project in Fort Lauderdale
Description: The project improvements consist of full removal of the existing bridge paint and repainting of all steel bridge components, cleaning and coating of the movable span piers, traffic and pedestrian concrete railing, and control house. Description: The project improvements include upgrading and installing a new fiber optic network; installing Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) devices including Closed-Circuit Television Cameras (CCTV) controlled by wireless network devices; installing Bluetooth travel time devices along the corridor; installing two Arterial Dynamic Messaging Signs (ADMS); upgrading Traffic Signal Vehicle Detection Systems along the corridor; and removing and reinstalling existing pavers where impacted by construction.
